LinkedIn has been rolling out new features in the past year and creator mode was a huge one that was talked about a lot before it's release. This was supposed to revolutionize the LinkedIn experience for creators.
But did it?
Let's talk about it

So creator mode is one of those things where you wonder if it matters whether you turn it on or not. Some people have argued that they've seen their reach drop after turning on creator mode.
I must say, I did see my reach drop when it was just released. But at the moment, it's gone back to normal.
So first, let's talk about what creator mode is.
As I mentioned before, this is a relatively new LinkedIn feature which when turned on gives you access to what they call "Creator Tools".
Now, what are those creator tools?
#1: LinkedIn live
You automatically have the ability to go live on LinkedIn when creator mode is turned on. Unlike before where you had to apply to be given the privilege to go live on that platform, now, all you have to do is turn on creator mode, an you have access to LinkedIn live. However, you still have to use a 3rd party streaming tool like Streamyard, Restream, Vimeo or Zoom, because, at the moment, you still do not have the ability to live traditionally on LinkedIn.
I know, that's a bummer 😕
#2: LinkedIn Audio Room
This is like clubhouse, where you can have conversations with people in rooms without having to turn on your camera. I personally haven't tried this yet this yet, so I really can't talk about in detail. However, I've attended a couple of audio events on LinkedIn and it's pretty interractive. This is best for you if you want to hold an interractive audio event with our audience. People are more open to participate and ask questions without the pressure of having to look good on camera.
#3: LinkedIn Newsletter
This is one of my best LinkedIn Creator Tool. This used to be articles, but has now been replaced with newsletters and a little twist added to it. I'll go into more details on how to approach LinkedIn newsletters in a stand alone blog post, so look out for that.
#4: Cover Story
You can add a cover story to your profile. This is a 30 second video that appears around your profile picture. This is where you can introduce yourself to your profile visitors and give them a reason to stick around, follow you or connect with you. Address your customer and give them a glimpse of your personality as you introduce yourself and tell them what you do and who you help. Then add 5 niche hashtags to your profile
#5: Add 5 Hashtags on your LinkedIn Profile
Another thing that creator mode gives you access to is the ability to add 5 hashtags on your LinkedIn profile. The idea here is to pick 5 niche hashtags that reflects what you do and what you talk about. This immediately gives your profile visitors an idea of what you do, and repels non ideal prospects which is a plus.
#6: Connect to Follow Button
Also, when you turn on creator mode, the connect button on your profile changes to follow. So people can instantly follow you, rather than send you a connection request. Creator mode takes away that barrier.
#7: LinkedIn Profile
Lastly, once creator mode is turned on, your LinkedIn profile appears differently than when it isn't.
- First you have your 5 niche hashtags that show up after your headline, - Then you have your featured section where you can showcase client testimonials, client feedback or popular posts
- Then you have your 4 most recent posts,
- And lastly, your about section.
This in my opinion is one of the best things about creator mode, because in a few seconds, if optimized effectively, your LinkedIn profile has the ability to provide the necessary information someone looking for your services needs in order to push them to take action towards working with you.
I've had people reach out to me after viewing my LinkedIn profile, and sign into my course. That's how powerful your LinkedIn profile is. Watch this video right here to learn more about how to update your LinkedIn profile.
Now that we've gone through all the creator tools that creator mode gives you access to, now let's talk about how you can leverage it to grow on LinkedIn as a Freelancer.
It's simple;
Take advantage of all these tools and use them to reach your customer.
Whether it's your cover story, your hashtags, your content or your LinkedIn profile as a whole, you want to think of your customer and use them as reference when using these creator tools. They are available for you to explore and figure out what works best for you when it comes to reaching your customer and building your brand on LinkedIn as a freelancer or as a creator.
So yes, creator mode is a very great resource for freelancers as well as any content creator on LinkedIn, because it gives you access to tools that help you communicate your value and reach your audience. So if you do not have it turned on, you want to go right now and turn it on, update your profile and start taking advantages of these resources.
Which of these tools would you use first?
